Why Do people have a Blood Let?

A blood let service has multiple benefits.

Venesection is used to reduce blood thickness or lower excess iron/red cell mass.

Common indications:

  • Polycythaemia vera – too many red blood cells → thick blood → clot risk

  • Haemochromatosis – excess iron stored in organs

  • Secondary polycythaemia (e.g. TRT, sleep apnoea, COPD, high altitude)

  • Porphyria cutanea tarda (iron reduction helps)

  • Symptomatic hyperviscosity (headaches, dizziness, ruddy complexion)

A bloodletting treatment can help to reduce the amount of iron within your body, reducing iron from your body also improves your vascular health. This treatment aims to prevent complications and damage to organs caused by excess iron, also managing iron levels can alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, and weakness. After a few days your blood cells start to regenerate and you start to feel more energetic and refreshed. It is an easy process and can take up to 30 minutes. Blood letting is benefical for many people who cannot donate blood.

With our blood let service, our trained phlebotomist takes aprox 400-500ml of blood, this allows enough blood to be out of the body for your blood cells to start to regenerate,

As a general rule a person needs at least 12 weeks between Blood Lets.
