You’ve done everything right. You’ve booked the test, you’ve fasted overnight, you’ve turned up on time. And then, somewhere in the small print of the pre-test instructions — if it was mentioned at all — was a line about pausing your supplements.
For most people, that instruction gets skipped. It’s the kind of detail that sounds like a formality. It isn’t. Certain supplements can meaningfully distort your blood test results — some by interfering with the lab’s chemistry, others by masking the very deficiency the test is trying to detect. The result is a report that looks clean but doesn’t reflect your actual biology.
The two most common culprits are also two of the most popular supplements on the shelf: biotin and B12. Here’s what they actually do to your results, which other supplements share the problem, and how long to pause each one before you test.

The problem isn’t the biotin itself. The problem is that a large proportion of modern blood tests are built on a piece of chemistry that biotin interferes with directly.
Most hormone, thyroid, cardiac, and vitamin immunoassays rely on a binding reaction between two molecules called streptavidin and biotin — a bond so strong and specific that lab manufacturers use it to detect the marker of interest in your sample. When there’s a large amount of biotin already floating around in your blood from a supplement, that biotin competes with the assay’s own biotin, and the reading is thrown off.
The effect is not subtle. Depending on the assay, biotin interference can push results falsely high or falsely low — and the direction depends on how the specific test is designed.
Which tests biotin distorts most

The clinical picture that biotin most commonly creates is a false pattern of subclinical hyperthyroidism — suppressed TSH with elevated free hormones — in someone whose thyroid is entirely normal. It’s a well-documented cause of unnecessary onward investigation, referral, and in some cases misdiagnosis.

Fish oil and omega-3s. These don’t affect most standard panels, but they can influence lipid readings, particularly triglycerides. For an accurate cardiovascular lipid picture, pause omega-3 supplements for 24–48 hours.
Collagen and protein supplements. Very high-protein intake before a test can transiently affect urea and, in some individuals, creatinine — which matters if kidney function is being assessed. A normal day’s eating in the 24 hours before the draw is more useful than a training-day protein load.
